A few things push the rate up or down:
How far you are from JFK. This is the biggest factor by far. A ride from the Hamptons is going to cost more than one from Central Islip, simply because it's a longer drive.
What you're riding in. A sedan is the most affordable option. If you need an SUV, or you've got a group that needs a Sprinter van, expect to pay more for the extra space.
Time of day. Early morning airport runs and late-night pickups sometimes carry a small adjustment, but nothing like the wild swings you'd see with a rideshare app during a surge.
Tolls. A legitimate car service builds tolls into your quote up front — the LIE, the Van Wyck, whatever you're crossing — so you're not hit with a surprise charge when you get dropped off.
Gratuity. Some companies include it in the quote, some don't. Worth asking before you book so there's no confusion at the end of the ride.
How many people and how much luggage. A group of five with golf clubs and suitcases isn't fitting in a sedan, and that changes what vehicle — and price — makes sense.
Is Uber Actually Cheaper Than a Car Service to JFK?
Sometimes, on paper. But it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison once you factor in a few things:
Rideshare pricing surges exactly when you don't want it to — bad weather, early morning flights, holiday travel. That "cheap" $60 Uber estimate can turn into $140 by the time you actually book it. A car service quote doesn't move.
There's also the flight-tracking piece. If your flight gets delayed, a real car service adjusts your pickup time automatically, no extra charge. An Uber driver isn't watching your flight status — they show up when you told them to, delay or not.
And there's accountability. If your Uber driver cancels five minutes before pickup because a surge popped up nearby, you're scrambling. A dedicated service doesn't have that incentive to bail on you.
